Our location and surroundings
The Orangerie used to be part of the Chateau of La Foret-Auvray, now our fine neighbors. The grounds of the Orangery offer more than 7000 m2 of garden; here you can
- badminton
- sun bathing
- footballs
- barbecue
The children can play to their hearts’ content. The entire garden is surrounded by a stone wall.
The Orangerie is located in Swiss Normandy or ‘Montagnes de Normandie’, in a beautiful valley near the river Orne. Enjoy the beauty that Normandy has to offer; from walking and cycling routes to water activities in the nearby lake.
ACTIVE & BISTRO
In the immediate vicinity, 2 hiking trails of 7 and 13 kilometers can be found. And a 5-minute drive away are Les Roches d’Oetre, a beautiful natural area with multiple hiking and biking trails, a climbing forest, pony-riding and fine bistro (I love the pizzas) and the Office de Tourisme.
BEACH & HISTORY
The D-Day beaches are a very impressive historical site to visit on a day trip. The Orangery has plenty of materials available to create the perfect itinerary.
Also Bayeux with its world-famous first cartoon/wall hangings is very easy to visit from the Orangery.
WATER SPORTS & LOCAL REFRESHMENT
Just under 10 minutes away is the Lac the Rabodanges where all kinds of water sports are practiced. On the way back, visit the K-Rabo (lekrabo.fr) for local refreshments.
GROCERIES
The nearest small supermarkets are in Putanges le Lac and in St. Honorine.
Other options include Flers or Argentan, each about half an hour away. And for real shopping, you can go to Caen, about 45 minutes away.
PICNIC BY THE LAKE
A half-hour drive away is the lake of Ferte-Macé, a lovely place for a picnic.
KNIGHTS & CASTLES
Not far from the Orangerie, about a fifteen-minute drive away is Falaise, with the castle of William the Conqueror, highly recommended.
In Falaise are also supermarkets, patisseries, butchers and a variety of other stores.
